Acutechnology Patents Sigma-Servo™ Architecture

SAN JOSE, CA, April. 25 -- Acutechnology Semiconductor Inc., innovators in power management, today announced the issue of the company's latest patent, US7,034,490, "Motor positioning servo loop using oversampling bitstream DAC". The patent relates the Acutechnology's Sigma-Servo™ technology, allowing a high performance analog to digital converter in a servosystem to be replaced by a digital oversampled modulator. The patent covers a broad use of the Sigma-Servo™ technology in any motor control application.

The patent, awarded to company founders Carl Sawtell and Paolo Menegoli, has the potential for significant cost reduction in precision servo systems such as hard disks and optical drives, as well as robotics and automation products. The technique allows for the control system to be implemented without its most difficult and expensive bit of analog circuitry. providing a significant improvement in the cost of a given level of performance. Cost is reduced not only in silicon but also in manufacturing (test) and in product development due to the elimination of precision components that previously needed considerable attention in design and test.

Acutechnology is currently negotiating licenses to this technology. Additional patent applications, including those for motor control and power management circuits, are being prosecuted with the US Patent and Trademark office.
